Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. The main mode of transmission of the virus is ingestion of food or water contaminated by the infected person's feces with uninfected (unvaccinated) persons. The disease is closely related to unsafe water or food, poor sanitation, poor personal hygiene and oral-anal sex. Unlike hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A does not cause chronic liver disease and is rarely fatal. However, debilitating symptoms can occur and lead to severe hepatitis (acute liver failure), which is often fatal.which is often fatal.

The incubation period for hepatitis A is usually 14–28 days. Symptoms of hepatitis A vary, and may include fever, discomfort, loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine and jaundice (yellow skin and white eyes). Not every person with the infection will experience all symptoms. Adults show more signs and symptoms of the disease than children. The severity of disease and the incidence of deaths are higher in older people. Infected children under the age of 6 usually have no obvious symptoms, and about 10% of them develop jaundice. In older children and adults, symptoms of infection are often more severe, and jaundice occurs in more than 70% of cases. Hepatitis A sometimes recurs. Patients who have just recovered may fall ill again, with another acute attack, but usually recover. Therefore, timely and accurate detection is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis A patients. It is currently not clinically possible to distinguish between cases of hepatitis A from other types of acute viral hepatitis. The main methods to distinguish between them still need to be detected by pathogens, which mainly include detection of hepatitis A virus-specific immunoglobulin G (IgM) antibodies in the blood, and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR and other methods to detect hepatitis A virus ribonucleic acid (RNA).

Usually, IgM antibodies are produced early, and once infected, they are produced quickly, with a short maintenance time and rapid disappearance. A positive blood test can be used as an indicator of early infection. IgG antibodies are produced late, are maintained for a long time, and disappear slowly. Positive tests in the blood can be used as indicators of infection and previous infections. Fluorescent quantitative PCR is more sensitive than viral antibodies, and it is accurate and fast. It is currently widely used in pathogen detection.
