December 1 2022 is the 35th World AIDS Day. UNAIDS confirms the theme of World AIDS Day 2022 is "Equalize". The theme aims to improve the quality of AIDS prevention and treatment, advocate the whole society to actively respond to the risk of AIDS infection, and jointly build and share a healthy social environment.
According to the data of the United Nations Program on AIDS, as of 2021, there were 1.5 million new HIV infections worldwide, and 650,000 people will die from AIDS-related diseases. The AIDS pandemic will cause an average of 1 death per minute.
01 What is AIDS?
AIDS is also called "Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome". It is an infectious disease caused by the immune system deficiency virus (HIV), which causes the destruction of a large number of T lymphocytes and makes the human body lose immune function. T lymphocytes are immune cells of human bodies. AIDS makes people vulnerable to various diseases and increases the probability of developing malignant tumors, as patients’ T-cells are destroyed, and their immunity is extremely low. There is currently no cure for HIV infection, which means there is no cure for AIDS.
02 Symptoms of HIV infection
The main symptoms of AIDS infection include persistent fever, weakness, persistent generalized lymphadenopathy, and weight loss of more than 10% in 6 months. AIDS patients with other symptoms can cause respiratory symptoms such as cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing, etc. Gastrointestinal symptoms: anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Other symptoms: dizziness, headache, unresponsiveness, mental decline, etc.
03 Routes of AIDS infection
There are three main routes of HIV infection: blood transmission, sexual transmission, and mother-to-child transmission.
(1) Blood transmission: Blood transmission is the most direct way of infection. For example, shared syringes, fresh wounds exposure to HIV-contaminated blood or blood products, use of contaminated equipment for injection, acupuncture, tooth extraction, tattoos, ear piercing, etc. All of these conditions are at risks of HIV infection.
(2) Sexual transmission: Sexual transmission is the most common way of HIV infection. Sexual contact between heterosexuals or homosexuals can lead to HIV transmission.
(3) Mother-to-child transmission: HIV-infected mothers transmit HIV to baby during pregnancy, childbirth or postpartum breastfeeding.
